SUMMARY:Midday Break
DESCRIPTION:Midday Break: Read and React: “What is my calling? An exploratory mixed-methods approach to conceptualizing hospitality career calling”\nMany are feeling the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the events industry workforce. Organizations and venues alike are struggling to hire back employees\, recruit new staff\, and retain existing staff. Join this PCMA PHL Midday Break to discuss an academic article that studied “calling dimensions” as they relate to advancing the hospitality workforce. According to the article\, “Calling has historically been defined as a sense of destiny or prosocial obligation (Duffy et al.\, 2018); however\, calling has more recently been understood as a sense of fulfillment or happiness\, emphasizing the current workforces’ focus on meaningful careers (Duffy et al.\, 2018). Calling has been found to enhance academic satisfaction (Duffy et al.\, 2011)\, life satisfaction (Duffy et al.\, 2017)\, vocational identity (Galles and Lenz\, 2013; Hirschi and Herrmann\, 2012) and well-being (Marsh and Dik\, 2020). More importantly\, previous studies found a sense of calling positively influences critical job-related attitudes and behavior such as career commitment\, job satisfaction and turnover (Chen et al.\, 2018; Duffy et al.\, 2012).” Join us for this session to discuss this study in more detail and what insights might be gleaned for solving current staffing challenges. \nThis article was written by: Lindsey Lee\, School of Sport\, Tourism and Hospitality Management\, Temple University; Sandra Sun-Ah Ponting\, L. Robert Payne School of Hospitality and Tourism Management\, San Diego State University; Ankita Ghosh\, William F. Harrah College of Hospitality\, University of Nevada Las Vegas; Hyounae (Kelly) Min\, The Collins College of Hospitality Management\, California State Polytechnic\, University Pomona. Dr. Lee will join us as the session facilitator. \nClick here to view the article. \nLearning Objectives: \n\nLearn about “calling identities” as they relate to advancing the hospitality workforce\nDiscuss current challenges in staffing in event management\nConsider possible solutions\, including “calling identities\,” for solving staffing challenges\n\n \nDr. Lindsey Lee will participate in this discussion. She is an assistant professor at Temple University’s School of Sport\, Tourism\, and Hospitality Management and focuses on maximizing service performance while supporting employee wellbeing. Dr. Lee’s research interests include identifying management and organizational practices to support employees\, implementing emotional labor to manage difficult guests\, and employee management training and development. \nThe PCMA Greater Philadelphia Chapter has been approved by the Events Industry Council (EIC) as a Preferred Provider of this continuing education course\, which qualifies for CMP continuing education credit. Determination of continuing education credit eligibility or Preferred Provider status does not imply EIC’s endorsement or assessment of education quality. \nRegistration Information: Please consider making a donation towards registration for this meeting. Registration fees are a key source of revenue for the chapter. There is a $1.00 minimum. Any amount is appreciated. A Zoom link will be emailed to registered attendees prior to the midday break.

What is the state of the meeting planning industry with regards to current planning challenges\, future bookings\, the economy\, event design\, etc.? How are suppliers and planners working together to bring constituents back to in-person events? How have decision-making processes been affected for suppliers and planners? How are planners conceiving their events in light of changes to technology and access to content\, and how are they thinking about and creating sustainable event models post-COVID? A panel of industry professionals will join us for a moderated discussion on these topics.\nModerator:\nKavin Schieferdecker\, Senior Vice President\, Philadelphia Convention & Visitors Bureau\nSpeakers:\nDerrick M. Grimes\, Esq.\, Attorney at Law\, Grimes Law Offices\, LLC\, Current and Future Legal Considerations in Event Planning\nAs we emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic\, planners are getting back to the business of finalizing contracts placed on hold or booking new business for 2021 and beyond. What has changed in contracting since COVID-19? Join us for a conversation with Joshua L. Grimes\, Esq.\, Attorney at Law\, Grimes Law Offices\, LLC\, to learn more about trends in contracting and legal considerations. \nSession Three: Steve Garguilo\, PCMA Best in Class Speaker\, Showing Up More Empowered at Work\nEmpowered employees aren’t satisfied being on the outside looking in. They are explorers and action-takers. They use their creativity to imagine what a new world could look like and apply their energy and courage to bring their imagination tolife. But it can be hard sometimes to feel like you’re really empowered at work to make change. There are all kinds of rules and reasons why things can’t work\, and your management might frown upon what you think about as a good idea. Over time\, this can lead to people not bringing forward new ideas anymore or not pushing to challenge the status quo. In this session\, we’ll explore stories\, models\, and experiments for how to show up more empowered at work. You’ll hear stories of people who were able to make a big impact inside their complex workplaces\, and you’ll learn about power dynamics and how you can make change no matter your role or title. \nLearner Outcomes:\n•Explore specific stories of people who challenged the status quo at work and what you can learn from them\n•Apply the different constructs of power (power to\, power with\, power within\, power over) to your situation\n•Learn how to assess your current level of empowerment using a validated\, researched model (Autonomy\, Fulfillment\, Community\, Competence) and take action to make waves inside your organization \nRegistration Fees: \n\n\n\n\nRegistration Category \n\n\nEarly Bird—Until September 3\, 2021 \n\nOn-Site Registration—After September 3\, 2021\n\n\nPCMA PHL Members\n\n$40.00 \n\n\n$50.00 \n\n\n\nPlanner and Supplier Non-Members\n\n$50.00 \n\n\n$60.00 \n\n\n\nFaculty Members\n\n$25.00 \n\n\n$35.00 \n\n\n\nFaculty – Non-Members\n\n$35.00 \n\n\n$45.00 \n\n\n\n\nStudents \n\n$15.00\n\n$25.00 \n\n\n\n\n  \nRegistration Information: \n\nMembership to the PCMA Greater Philadelphia Chapter is not required to attend.\nIf you are not a member\, click here to join today. What does the in-person and virtual presentation of content look like to attendees? How will budgets and registration fees change/be modified? During this midday break\, we’ll start a conversation on this timely topic\, with more programming to follow later in the year.  \nFormat/Speakers: \n\n12:00 PM: Welcome/introductions\n12:05 PM: White Paper/Case Study Presentation\, Onsite Trends/Resources for F2F Meetings\, Julie Smith\, Senior Vice President\, Exhibition Sales\, GES; Chair\, APEX COVID-19 Business Recovery Task Force\n12:25 PM: Breakout groups (groups of 5-8 people will discuss three questions)\n12:40 PM: Groups report back what they learned\, questions that came up\, etc.\n12:55 PM: Wrap up/conclusions\n\nSome of the breakout questions that will be discussed include the following: \n\nWhat does “hybrid” mean to you/your organization?
